The Mark of True Discipleship

We live in a world where words often come easier than actions. It is easy to say “Lord, Lord,” but far harder to live in obedience to Him. Jesus Himself warned, “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?” (Luke 6:46). True worship is not found in lip service, but in obedience.

Think of a soldier in an army. No soldier calls his commander “sir” and then ignores his orders. His loyalty is proven by his obedience. In the same way, Christians are called “soldiers of Christ” (2 Timothy 2:3–4), and our faith is proven not by titles or words, but by submission to the commands of our Master. In the first century, believers were called “Christians” by outsiders because their lives reflected obedience to Christ (Acts 11:26).

Our natural sinful tendency is to obey ourselves—to follow our desires, pride, and comfort. Yet Jesus said plainly, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). Obedience is not optional; it is the very essence of discipleship. To love Christ is to obey Him: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15).

And what is one of His clearest commands? To go and preach the gospel to all nations (Matthew 28:19–20). As soldiers under His authority, our response should be simple: “Yes, Sir.” Then we go. Yet many of us must honestly ask—have we obeyed this command, or have we been content with words without action?

The body of Christ is like a team, each member gifted differently but united in one mission: to glorify God. Some teach, some serve, some give, some go—but all are called to obey. Just as Paul wrote, “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it” (1 Corinthians 12:27).

Conclusion

Obedience is not a burden but a joy, the natural response of a heart transformed by Christ. To call Him “Lord” is to surrender our will and exalt His. As soldiers of Christ, let us examine ourselves, lay down self, and rise up in obedience. Our mission is clear, our Commander has spoken, and our victory is certain—not for earthly treasure, but for the glory of Him who called us.
